VIDEOS & PHOTOS: Nominees for the best in bluegrass in 2011

The Gibson Brothers top the list of most-nominated (7 nominations!) for the International Bluegrass Music Association awards this year. It’s not the first time that the upstate New York group has been nominated, but their recognition is well-deserved. The awards ceremony will be held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Sept. 29, 2011. It’s always hard to know who will win in the various categories, since it is a popularity contest with selections made by bluegrass fans who are members of the IBMA. So you never know.

The event is the culmination of a year of fine achievements by the greatest performers in bluegrass. There are not too many surprises. Most of the nominees are popular and well known to bluegrass fans. Many have had songs throughout the year on the Bluegrass Unlimited charts, which list the top songs being played by bluegrass stations worldwide.

Of note this year are the inductees into the bluegrass music Hall of Fame in the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky — Del McCoury and George Shuffler. (Read all about them on the IBMA site.)

McCoury has been performing for more than 50 years, coming to the national fore as lead singer and driving rhythm guitarist with Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys during 1963 and 1964. He has nine IBMA Entertainer of the Year awards, a 2006 Grammy award and a 2010 National Heritage Award. McCoury and his band are synonymous with bluegrass. His white, meticulously coiffed hair, ear-to-ear infectious grin and high tenor vocals have made him an icon of the genre.

Shuffler is known in bluegrass circles but doesn’t have the same notoriety as McCoury. Nonetheless, inspired by Bill Napier, he developed the cross-picking guitar style that influenced countless performers and worked as a sideman for bands that were important in shaping the development of the bluegrass genre. The Dixie Bee-Liners have been spearheading the campaign to recognize Shuffler. Read about their efforts and guitar/mandolin player’s comments about Shuffler.

Here’s a video interview with George Shuffler that demonstrates the cross-picking styles that Shuffler developed:

In the coming days, I will post videos of some of the nominees, so check back. I have my favorites, but I am just one vote. Who knows who will win this year? I will be attending this year’s awards ceremony and will post results as soon as I can after the event. But the Bluegrass Blog will likely be your speedy definitive source of the winners, since I know I’m not too fast at this stuff.

Here are many of the nominees, but not all. Click to see gallery of images.
